A Copy of the New Testament
Bible, from my perspective, is the best representation of an ancient, stated authority in knowledge. However the specific copy has “scars” – handwritten notes – left by a stranger all entirely its cover page. That seems like a physical manifestation of person’s internal struggle with religious, universal truth. It forces me to realize that knowledge is never truly static.

For me the art of Bashlachev is more than just text, it’s more likely to be a confession regarding the specific culture at the specific historic point. Coming from the same linguistic and cultural sphere, I’m able to uncode the meaning headen under metaphors and similies. So, it is a strange, heavy realization that this such a message is locked for those out of our culture, and those who cannot find the truth in his words. This manuscript proves to me that personal experience acts as a gatekeeper; my background gives me the key to a truth that others might only see as ink on paper.

This is a photo of a vacation from 2012, which for a stranger just looks like a moment from my childhood. However, this photo raises valuable memories every time I see it. This object is significant to me because it shows how a “factual” record like a photo can be interpreted in different ways depending on whose personal experience is being used to tell the story. It shows that even the most objective evidence can be reshaped by different personal experiences.
